Projects

Study of the sugar-lowering effect of some extracts of Al-Jawf region plants and some marine algae.
2018 - 2019

Seaweeds are rich in structurally diverse bioactive compounds with promising therapeutic effects. This study aimed to isolate and identify terpenes from the brown alga Padina pavonia and to investigate its antidiabetic activity, pointing to the possible involvement of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ. Type 2 diabetes was induced by feeding rats a high fat diet (HFD) for 4 weeks followed by injection of 35 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). The diabetic rats received P. pavonia extract (PPE; 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) for 4 weeks and samples were collected for analyses.

Proteomic analysis of the venom of Conus flavidus from Red Sea reveals potential pharmacological applications
2023 - 2024

Venomous marine cone snails produce unique neurotoxins called conopeptides or conotoxins, which are valuable for research and drug discovery. Characterizing Conus venom is important, especially for poorly studied species, as these tiny and steady molecules have considerable potential as research tools for detecting new pharmacological applications.

Antiviral Peptides
2022 - 2025
Possible involvement of Nrf2 and PPARγ up-regulation in the protective effect of umbelliferone against cyclophosphamide-induced hepatotoxicity
2016 - 2017

Umbelliferone (UMB) is a coumarin derivative with promising hepatoprotective effects. In this study, we examined the possible protective effects of UMB against cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced hepatotoxicity, addressing the question of the possible role of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ). Wistar rats were orally administered UMB at doses 50 and 100mg/kg two weeks prior to CP injection. Five days after CP administration, the rats were sacrificed and samples were collected for analyses.

Targeting the nuclear receptor PPARγ to protect against the development of liver carcinogenesis using plants and algae of the Al-Jawf region.

Molecular docking of eleven snake venom peptides targeting human immunodeficiency virus capsid glycoprotein as inhibitors
2023 - 2024

Background: Snake venoms are mainly composed of a mixture of proteins and peptides with antiviral activity against several viruses including HIV. Therefore, snake venoms represent a promising source for new antiviral drugs.
Aim: The study examines the toxin's capacity to disrupt the spike glycoprotein of HIV, the virus accountable for the HIV epidemic.
