    The module designed to provide students with the essential knowledge and skills which will contribute to the development of Infection Prevention and Control practice. The indicative content of the course will consist of basic biology of common micro-organisms types, the immune system and physiological effects of infection in the human host. For those in designated Infection Prevention and Control roles; students will analyze the importance of healthcare associated infection and wider related issues of commissioning services and antibiotic resistance.     The course introduces students to the scope of antimicrobial chemotherapy and considers antibiotic treatment of various infections. It will also discuss classification of antibiotics, antimicrobial combination therapy and antibiotic policies. Students will also investigate mechanism of action, spectrum, pharmacokinetics and adverse events of the major classes of antimicrobial agents. It will also introduce and explain the concept of Antimicrobial Stewardship as an inter-disciplinary, multi-faceted approach to optimize antimicrobial use.

    Course Description:
    Molecular Biology course for level-3 in Master of Infection Prevention and Control program. It is a 3 credit hour course and continues for 15 weeks and includes different aspects of Molecular Biology and its applications in infection control. It is conducted through theoretical and practical labs/studios and different activities including journal clubs, projects ---etc. This course is designed to provide students with up-to-date knowledge and practice of Molecular Biology as applied biotechnology related to infection control. Students will learn how nucleic acid technology can help very much in detection and identification of infections and for how extend they can be useful for mutation detection in relation to drug resistance. Also students will be able to apply information technology together with molecular biology for epidemiology and related implementations.

Hands-on with BLAST, GenBank, OMIM, GENE, UniProt, Muscle, PFAM, and PDB bioinformatics tools and databases. Also, students will use Sequence alignment fundamentals, algorithms, and applications.
