    The course starts with the basic concepts of sample preparation are presented with view of its role in the overall measurement process. Errors associated quantitative analysis, and important figures of merit, such as, accuracy, precision, sensitivity, method detection limit, range of quantitation, and finally method validation will be discuss from a sample preparation perspective. A discussion on sample preservation is followed by quality control issues pertaining to sample preparation. The US EPA recommendations for storage conditions for environmental sampling.

    This is a course in physical chemistry focusing on statistical thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics. Kinetics of complex reactions: (reversible reactions, consecutive reactions, parallel reactions and chain reaction). Pre-equilibrium, steady-state approximation, Kinetics of the reaction in solution. Statistical thermodynamics and microscopic properties, probability and entropy, Boltzmann distribution law, determination of partition functions and its application, thermodynamics parameter in terms of partition function, partition function of polyatomic molecules (translational, rotational, vibrational, electronic partition function). Equilibria constant in terms of partition function. Calculation of the factor eα and eβ. Velocity Distribution Function of Maxwell-Boltzmann.

    This course deals with the application of structure and theory to the study of organic reaction: isotope effects and molecular orbital theory applied to pericyclic and organic photochemical reactions; and special reactive intermediates including carbenes, carbanions, and free radicals. In addition, functional group interconversion by nucleophilic substitution (heterocyclic compounds). Recognition of functional groups are also covered. The course also distributed to electrophilic addition to carbon-carbon multiple bonds.

    Modern organic spectroscopy describes the four major instrumental methods used by organic chemists: UV/Vis, IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and mass spectrometry. It gives a concise introduction to the physical background of each, describing how molecules interact with electromagnetic radiation and how this information may be applied to the determination of accurate chemical structures. It also includes simple descriptions of instrumentation of all spectral analysis. The use of 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectroscopy in differentiation of structural isomers of organic compounds. The course includes full study in different fragmentation routes for different classes of organic compounds when subjected to mass spectrometric analysis. Each chapter concludes with problems to test students understanding of organic spectroscopy.

    Course Description:
    An understanding of the chromatographic theory, and operating mechanism of ionisation techniques and mass analysers is essential for method selection, development and optimisation. This is an advanced course in chromatography and mass spectrometry for chemical analysis of organic and inorganic compounds. The course is a natural extension of any basic course in analytical chemistry for everybody who is going to use modern hyphenated techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS(MS) for analysis of complex mixtures. The course covers chromatographic separation of small molecule organic and inorganic compounds with special emphasize on the molecular mechanism and theory of analyte-column interactions for gas, supercritical fluid and liquid chromatography, and the theory of ionization, fragmentation, mass-to-charge separation, ion detection and data interpretation for all common mass spectrometers and ionization techniques. The theory is taught using lectures, colloquia sessions, and theoretical exercises supplemented with guest-lectures of selected topics.

Mechanisms of electron transfer reactions (key idea – outer sphere – inner sphere – two electron transfer). Synthesis of coordination compounds using electron transfer reactions. Ligand substitution reactions of associative and dissociative reaction mechanisms – stoichiometric and intimate mechanisms.
