Course Description
Epidemiology is one of the basic tools for public health professionals and can be termed as the base stone for scientific, medical and public health research. It helps in identifying the distribution, determinants and dynamics of disease in human population, thus enables the health professionals to adopt appropriate interventions for promotive, preventive curative and rehabilitative care. This course enables students to understand the basic concepts of epidemiology so that they can apply them in designing and appraising research projects as well as in understanding and evaluating medical literature. Health care managers and service providers, whether dealing with communities or clinical services, are required to analyze to ascertain the status, needs and other aspects of health care for evidence- based decision making and effective and efficient services. Infectious and non-infectious diseases can only be prevented and controlled with the basic understanding of epidemiology. Setting up surveillance systems, screening and epidemic investigations are the basic skills which students will achieve from the course.
