Students will be introduced to the distinctive feature theory, phonemes, allophones, syllables, syllable structure, aspects of connected speech (i.e., elision, linking, and assimilation), stress and intonation. The differences between English and other sound systems, like Arabic, will also be discussed. The course also deals with the impact of context on sound production and how the consonants that surround the vowel change the way the vowel is produced during connected speech.
