Course Description
The course surveys the development of Islamic architecture through history and cultures. It explores this architecture through the aspects of religion in art and architecture, the influence of social, historical and political developments, and the use of symbols as means of communication. Major examples of the main types of buildings in the Islamic era (like mosques, madrasas, mausoleum, etc.) are analyzed; their architectural, urban, and stylistic characteristics are examined in conjunction with their historical, political, and intellectual settings. The course starts with the early Islamic architecture, Ummayads Dynasty of Middle East, Abbasids Dynasty of Middle East, North African Islamic Architecture (Tulunian, Ikhsheedian, Ayubied, Fatimid, Seljuk Mamluk, Bahary Mamluk, Ottoman). The Islamic architecture in Spain and south Europe and Ottoman era in Turkey will be also be included. The contemporary Islamic architecture, interiors, and ornamentations can be discussed in brief at the end of the course. Course will be conducted through a serious of interactive lectures, class discussions and debates, and research assignments. Quizzes and assignments will punctuate the course at selected intervals that will act as revision and research aids.
