Course Description
This course is a global-oriented survey of the history of architecture, from the prehistoric to the Middle Ages. It treats buildings and its interiors, in the context of the cultural and civilizational history. Being global, it aims to give the student perspective on the larger pushes and pulls that influence architecture and its meanings, whether these are economic, political, religious or climatic.
This course serves as an introduction to evolution of architecture and interior and ornamentation from the early civilizations to the end of the Middle Ages. It will help students develop their own historical perspective on interpreting the built environment. The course focuses mainly on the development of western cultures but also offers an overview on the eastern and far eastern cultures happening in the same time frame to help students achieve a comparative perspective on the development of the built environment across different cultures. Concurrently, the social. Political and cultural factors affecting these developments will be discussed and analyzed.
