Efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation on functional outcomes and quality of life in Parkinson's, s patients

Abstract

Background: Cases with Parkinson's disease (PD) manifest cognitive dysfunction and concerned with debilitated life qualities and functional deterioration. Complaints progress till dementia reached. Many randomized clinical trials were published evaluating efficiency of cognitive rehabilitation on optimizing cognition, functional outcomes, and resulting in alterations in life qualities. Objective: our study aimed to assess efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation maneuver on functional outcomes, cognition, life qualities aspects in PD cases. Subjects and methods: Thirty male literate PD cases participated in our investigation. The cases divided to 2 groups; study group (A) received cognitive rehabilitation via Rehacom for 60 min and selected physical therapy program including trunk rotation & extension, weight shifting, and reciprocal motion exercises for 30 min, every other day for 36 sessions, total duration of session (90 min). control group (B) received, the same selected physical therapy program for 60 min, with three intermittent rest (30 minutes) every other day for 36 sessions total duration of session (90 min). Results: The results revealed that, in study group (A) there was significant improvement of functional outcomes and life qualities for PD cases compared to control (B). Improving of score in objective tools of assessment (Neuropsychological battery, Unified PD rating Scale, Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ-39) and W H O Disability Assessment Schedule II. post treatment in study group(A) comparing to control (B). Conclusion: Cognitive behavioral therapy can improve functional outcomes and life qualities for PD cases.
