Metal ion release from orthodontic appliances: Concerns regarding potential carcinogenic effects
Abstract
Orthodontic treatment, a widely practiced dental intervention to correct malocclusions and enhance dental aesthetics, often involves the use of metal appliances, such as braces and wires. Although orthodontic therapy has proven benefits, concerns have emerged regarding the potential release of metal ions from these appliances and their association with cancer. This letter aims to delve deeper into this topic by exploring the mechanisms of metal ion release, their potential carcinogenicity, evidence from in vitro and clinical studies, regulatory considerations, and conclusions drawn from existing research.
