Abstract

Background: Malignancy main breast cancer (BC) is affecting women worldwide. Thus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a widely reported candidate virus for this type of cancer. Objective: The study aimed to correlate Epstein–Barr virus Detection with the with prognostic factors findings of the breast carcinomas. Materials and methods: a retrospective study investigated 50 biopsy samples of breast cancer patients. Their ages were ranging from 20-80 years old, with a mean ± SD, fifty years ± 12.3 years. Results: The study reported 17 cases (34%) were positive for EBV from the cases. Of whom, 14 (28%) cases of invasive ductal carcinoma were reported positive for EBV from the cases, 2 (4%) cases of medullary carcinoma and 1(2%) case of invasive papillary carcinoma showed positivity for EBV, P value =0.04. the age group ranged from 31-50 showed 14 (28%) positive for EBV, P value =0.02. High EBV positivity was found in grade III which represented 9(18%) cases, P value =0.02. From ER positive expression cases 32(64%); found 9(18%) cases were positive for EBV, while 8 (16%) Positive EBV was reported among the 18 (36%) ER negative expression cases, hence there was no statistical significance. Among the PR negative status 29(58%) cases; EBV positive expression reported in 10 (20%) cases, no statistical significance. The study also showed no major correlation between HER-2 neu and EBV countenance. Conclusion and recommendations; EBV reported mostly among the invasive ductal carcinoma type. The age group ranged from 31-50 showed the highest positive EBV in cases. High EBV positivity was found in grade III breast cancer patients’ cases. There was no association between the ER, PR, HER2 prognostic markers and EBV expression. Further study should be done involving a large sample size and using different techniques.
