Abstract

Objectives: In the present study we aimed to assess the survival and to identify the factors responsible for the failure of com-posite restorations in permanent dentition.Methodology: A self structured proforma was designed containing the information about the patients and the reasons for thefailure of composite restorations. These proforma were distributed among four third year BDS students. These students noteddown the reasons for failure of composite restorations in the proforma as their findings, after examining the 100 randomlyselected patients from outpatient department, under the supervision of their clinical supervisors. The collected data was ana -lyzed by using a computer soft ware SPSS version 18, to get the results as frequencies and percentages. Results: This was a practiced based cross sectional study. This was done on existing composite restorations in clinical set -tings. The age range of the patients was from 16 years to 49 years with the mean age of 25 years. The mean age of the restorationat the time of examining the patient was found to be 16 months with SD of 12. The major factor responsible for the failure ofcomposite restorations was recurrent or secondary caries (69%). In 65% of the studied cases, pain and sensitivity was found tobe the second most common cause of failure of composite restorations. In 47% of the studied cases, the overhanging restorativemargins were the cause of failure of composite restorations.
